The new combined heat and power plant at the Karlsberg brewery, with a capacity of around 3.4 MWel, replaces the previous steam turbine based power supply system. The plant is tailored to suit the brewery’s power demand, with around half of the heat generated being used in the brewery and the other half fed into the Heizkraftwerk Homburg GmbH network which is operated as a joint venture between STEAG New Energies and the Homburg municipal utility. In addition, the plant will generate around 20,000 MWh of electricity each year, which is equivalent to the power demand of around 5,000 single-family homes. The combined heat and power generation saves a considerable amount of CO2 emissions, namely around 5,200 t per annum.
